About the Competition
Prize Money and Awards
The Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition is open to talented young singers who are currently in their sophomore, junior or senior year in high school. As part of its mission, the Schmidt Foundation encourages youth in the arts and provides support and inspiration to our next generation of artists. The Schmidt competition, now in its sixteenth year, has impacted the lives of over 5,500 youth throughout the country and annually provides scholarships for over 140 students. Our competitors have gone on to gain entrance into the world’s finest music schools and include winners of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the George London Competition, the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Competition, Classical Singer, and the National Opera Association Award.

Master Classes with Renowned Singers and Teachers
As part of the competition, our young artists have the opportunity to participate or observe master classes with our distinguished panel of world renowned singers and educators. Master clinicians will demonstrate ways to improve performance practice, interpretation of song and vocal technique. In addition, each competitor will receive written feedback from the adjudicators after the awards ceremony. Adjudicators will be present for a time period following the competition to visit with the students and explain their comments.
Matching Scholarships with Host Organizations
One of the top three winners from each competition may also qualify for a $4,000 matching scholarship to the host institution. Applicants must apply and meet university requirements and a matching scholarship must be provided by the host institution. Scholarships will be dispersed over four years of study.
This prestigious summer institute hosted by the William E. Schmidt Foundation in partnership with Miami University in Oxford Ohio pairs the nation's finest young talent with master teachers, famous singers and composers in a college-preparatory program. Applicants will engage in an intensive course of study including performance experiences in song recital, opera and musical theater scenes and master classes. The Schmidt Institute is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school. Winners of the Schmidt Competition qualify for scholarship to attend the Schmidt Summer Institute. Need-based and talent scholarships are also available through a competitive application process.

As part of its mission the William E. Schmidt Foundation provides support and encouragement to youth in the arts. Annually the Foundation provides scholarships and support to over one hundred and fifty students in the arts. The William E.
